If there’s one thing you can be sure of, it’s that nature is unpredictable. We don’t know when a major hurricane might hit the city of Charleston, but we can take some simple steps to prepare, just in case.
Note our four hurricane preparation tips, because as the old adage goes, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
1. Reinforce your house
Make sure rain gutters and downspouts are secure and free from any debris that might clog them, causing flooding. While you’re at it check the roof and windows to ensure they are sturdy enough to withstand strong winds.
2. Storm-proof your yard
Falling branches are one of the biggest causes of damage to your property during a hurricane. Check for deadwood and visible signs of disease which should be removed by an expert.
Thinning the canopy can help too. Allowing the wind to pass between the branches puts less pressure on the tree and decreases the likelihood it will break or be forcefully uprooted.
3. Buy the essentials
Stock up on bottled water and non-perishable foods in case you can’t get to the store for a while. You might even think about investing in a generator to cover your household in the event that a future storm causes power outages.
4. Make a plan
Make sure you have a contingency plan for you and your family in case of storm evacuation. Decide who is responsible for collecting your emergency kit and locating pets, if you have any. Plan a route to a secure location in advance and make sure there’s enough gas in your vehicle to get you there.
